Azure Hybrid Benefit lets you use existing Windows Server and SQL Server licenses to reduce Azure VM costs by up to 40-80%—but only if you track license assignments accurately enough to survive a Microsoft audit. The savings are real and significant: a D4s v3 VM drops from roughly $280/month to $140/month with Windows Server AHB applied. Multiply that across hundreds of VMs, and you're looking at six-figure annual savings. The challenge is compliance tracking. Microsoft requires that each Azure Hybrid Benefit usage maps to a qualifying on-premises license. Enterprise Agreement customers need to reconcile their license entitlements against Azure usage monthly, maintain documentation proving license eligibility, and handle edge cases like failover rights, disaster recovery, and dev/test environments. Most organizations either leave money on the table by not enabling AHB, or create compliance risk by enabling it without proper license tracking.
