azure-migrate

Azure Migrate is Microsoft's assessment and migration hub that works perfectly for simple scenarios and falls apart spectacularly for enterprise hybrid environments. It discovers your VMs, assesses Azure compatibility, estimates costs, and provides migration tooling. What it doesn't do: map application dependencies accurately, identify integration points with on-premises systems, or account for networking complexity that turns a "compatible" VM into a migration nightmare. At enterprise scale, Azure Migrate becomes one tool in a larger assessment process. You'll use it for discovery and compatibility checks, but you need additional tooling for dependency mapping, application-level assessment, and migration planning. The organizations that succeed treat Azure Migrate output as input for human decision-making—not as a migration plan. Every "ready to migrate" assessment needs validation against real-world factors that automated tooling can't evaluate: change control requirements, business continuity constraints, and compliance obligations.

Azure Migrate's 18-Month Data Deletion: The Enterprise Migration Timer Microsoft Calls 'Expected Behavior'

December 16, 2025

Azure Migrate appliances have an 18-month hard limit before mandatory re-registration that deletes all discovery data. Microsoft documents this as 'expected behavior' in the FAQ but provides no alerts, no data preservation, and no migration path. The certificate expires at 12 months with one 6-month extension available, then forces complete appliance reconfiguration with total data loss at month 18.
